Glossa is an application designed to aid in the development of lexicons and grammar documentation for low-resource languages. It serves as a valuable tool for translation and language development efforts.

This project holds a special place in my heart, and I'm deeply passionate about it. Unfortunately, funding for Glossa dried up, leading to a halt in development. However, a working beta version is available for download at Glossa.io.

I personally contributed to the UX design and some of the front-end code. We have successfully implemented a transcription interface, a peer-to-peer documentation sharing feature (which doesn't require an internet connection, as low-resource language development often occurs in offline settings), a tagging system utilizing the Outline of Cultural Materials (OCM) (for more information, refer to the HRAF), and several NGO teams have begun actively testing the software.

  • Matthew Moran spearheaded the development of Glossa using Electron, Angular, and a Material Design front-end framework.

  • Glossa is cross-platform and was intended to serve as a functional replacement for a tool called FieldWorks. FieldWorks is a .NET Windows-only application in the same field.

  • The website and the beta version are still accessible and downloadable. I encourage you to explore them further.
